This is the starting point for most clients.

This session starts with a full assessment of the nursing parent and infant, including an infant weight on a medical grade scale.

​

The lactation consultant will review the medical history provided on the intake forms, and fill in any blanks. 

​

A full feeding assessment will then be completed, reviewing what has been going well and what you wish would be going differently. Hands on support will be provided when required to latch babe, adjust the latch, and utilize support tools (nipple shield, lactation aid, etc.)

​

If supplementation is required options will be reviewed, with a hands on demonstration as necessary. A variety of infant feeding tools will be brought to each appointment for demonstration purposes, and in many cases these products will be available for purchase.

If a breast pump is being utilized to support or maintain lactation a brief pump assessment will also be completed, including a flange fitting, to ensure optimal pain free milk removal. 

​

If any areas of tension, restriction, or dysfunction were assessed during the physical and feeding assessment the lactation consultant will review stretches, exercises, and/or infant massage techniques to begin correcting these issues immediately. If necessary a referral can also be made to a practitioner specializing in infant habilitation such as an osteopath, chiropractor, physiotherapist, or registered massage therapist.

The visit will conclude with a review of a feeding plan, with edits made as requested.

This plan will be shared digitally with the client, through our secure platform.
